Journey into the Unknown

There is no such thing as a straight line in the Philippines. You never know what twists and turns your journey will take. It took awhile to decide on staying at Kaba Kaba Cottages. It seemed to have everything we wanted. It’s in our budget (read cheap), has a location set on the fringe of the jungle (appealing to our love of nature) and has a ‘presumed’ level of comfort we are satisfied with (simple). It also has favourable reviews. Reservations were made months in advance. Correspondence was good. We were ready and excited to go. We just had to get there.

Flying Cebu Air

We made it to the airport early and ofcourse our plane is delayed. No matter. We pretty much knew it was going to happen. It started to rain as we sat in the shuttle bus waiting to be allowed entry into our banana coloured prop plane and watched anxiously as our luggage was pelted by rain drops on the baggage cart.

Closing in on Busuanga’s tiny airport we see the scars left behind by last year’s devastating typhoon Yolanda. The landscape is dotted by broken trees and bare limbs. The plane swoops down and my heart races as we make an abrupt stop on a short 300 metre runway.

It feels like home.

We have landed in Palawan! A placard with our names point us to a waiting van. It feels incredible. The rolling landscape feels like home. After about twenty minutes we get dumped on the side of the road. The driver points to a sign and a dirt path. This is the way to the cottages.

Nothing’s going to be easy.

“The Chef” picks his bag up a hoists it on his shoulder while I am alone to fend for myself up a gradual but long hill. I begin to realize nothing is going to be easy here.
